Getting Started
What is your new patient procedure?
For treatment, please contact us via email, phone, or contact form to schedule a complimentary 15-minute telephone meeting. During this call, we would gather some information to better understand your concerns and answer any questions you may have about our services, such as timeline and pricing. If it is determined that Synapse Psychology Group can be of assistance and good fit for you, we would then schedule your first appointment. We will send back to you available appointment times, consent forms, and intake form via a secure platform.
For assessment, please contact us via email, phone, or contact form to schedule a complimentary 15-minute telephone meeting to review type of assessment services required and availability.
Is a referral required?
Referral sources include self-referral, family members, primary healthcare providers, specialists, community treatment providers, lawyer referrals, and insurance referrals (e.g., WSIB, MVA, etc.).
Do you see children or teenagers?
No. We provide psychological services to adults (18+) and seniors. If you are seeking services for a child or adolescent, we recommend speaking with your family physician, who can refer you to a practice specializing in child and youth psychology.
Services & Treatment
Is virtual therapy effective?
Videoconferencing sessions are conducted via a secure, PHIPA and PIPEDA compliant videoconferencing site. Research thus far has demonstrated that for most issues virtual therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy.
How long will therapy take?
Psychological treatment relies on evidence-based approaches. The number of treatment sessions can range depending on individual needs (e.g., 3 sessions, 12 sessions, etc.). The aim is to provide you with a tool box of strategies that you will be able to use independently in challenging situations in the future. Practice of strategies will be important during, as well as after treatment.
You may also find helpful to schedule "booster" sessions after completion of a round of treatment. These "booster" sessions can be booked at a reduced frequency and aid to review strategies and their applications in novel situations.
Can I access services virtually if I don't live in Toronto?
Yes. Virtual treatment and assessment services are available to clients physically located anywhere in Ontario, delivered through a secure, PHIPA and PIPEDA compliant videoconferencing platform. Many clients complete treatment entirely virtually; for assessments, we will advise during the initial phone meeting whether any components are best completed in person.
Assessments
What is the difference between a psychological assessment and a neuropsychological assessment?
A psychological assessment focuses on emotional and mental health functioning. It can clarify diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, or trauma-related conditions, and guide treatment planning. A neuropsychological assessment examines how brain function affects thinking — including memory, attention, processing speed, and executive functioning — and is typically recommended after a concussion or brain injury, when cognitive changes are noticed with aging, or when a condition such as ADHD is in question.
Both types of assessment conclude with a feedback session to discuss the findings and a comprehensive written report with recommendations.
Who might benefit from a neuropsychological assessment?
A neuropsychological assessment can be helpful for adults and seniors who are experiencing cognitive difficulties — for example, distractibility or forgetfulness, including symptoms of ADHD; cognitive changes following a concussion or traumatic brain injury; changes in thinking related to aging or a neurodegenerative condition; or difficulties with mood and adjustment following an injury or other life change. The assessment identifies cognitive strengths and areas of difficulty, and provides practical recommendations for treatment, rehabilitation, and accommodations.
Can adults be assessed for ADHD or autism?
Yes. Although ADHD and autism are often thought of as childhood diagnoses, many people reach adulthood without a formal diagnosis — particularly those who developed compensating strategies or learned to mask their differences. We provide comprehensive ADHD and autism assessments designed specifically for adults, with standardized measures validated for adult presentations. Each assessment concludes with a feedback session and a written report that can support treatment, workplace accommodations, or personal understanding.
How long does a neuropsychological assessment take, and what do I receive afterward?
A neuropsychological assessment begins with an intake interview, followed by testing sessions that typically require 3–6 hours, sometimes spread across multiple appointments. After scoring and interpretation, we meet for a feedback session to discuss the findings — cognitive strengths, areas of difficulty, diagnostic impressions, and practical recommendations. You also receive a detailed written report suitable for treatment providers, workplace accommodations, or academic support services.
